Who remembers Old Glory?
Old Glory is an oak tree that was home to tree sitter John Quigley in 2003 during his month long attempt to save it from its demise to allow the Southern Oaks section of Stevenson Ranch to be built. Mr. Quigley was literally extracted from the tree after a court order demanded him to vacate the branches. When i say literally, I am not kidding. He was actually chained to the tree and the sheriffs cut the chains and put him in a basket as they lowered him down. It was a pretty peaceful process, but took about an hour. His efforts did not go unnoticed and in the end, it was worth it. Old Glory was moved about 500 feet away in 2004 and currently sits in Pico Canyon Park. There is a fence around the tree, but no sign. You would think after gaining national media attention that the tree would at least have a sign right?
John Quigley…if you are reading this. I thought you were crazy back then, but now that I can admire Old Glory in all of his glory, well…thank you. I never really appreciated it before.
