I had the pleasure of attending the Valencia High School graduation last night at COC.

The stadium was packed on both sides and the ceremony was perfect.  Not too long and the weather could not have been better.  Congrats to all the 2008 graduates! (Go Nicole!!)

Valencia Vikings Advance to the CIF Championship

As the defending national champs made the drive to Corona today to play Santiago in the semi-finals, they knew they had a chance to beat Corona two years in a row on their home field.  They did just that.  Jessica Spigner came up with a two run home run in her first at bat with a 2-0 count and then ripped another shot in her second at bat off the first pitch.  The final score was 3-2 and the Vikings will face Simi Valley in the Finals this weekend in Irvine.

Check out the last out with two runners on.

Good luck to the Lady Vikings!!!

Seats in the City

There are vacant seats in different city panels and planning commissions and they need to be filled.  If you have experience or are interested in contributing to the growth and development  of Santa Clarita consider applying for one of these spots.

  • Parks and Rec Commission
  • Planning Commission
  • Open Space Preservation District Financial Accountability and Audit Panel

If you are interested you can go to the city clerk’s office or download an application from the city website on Friday.  Applications are due on June 20th and council members will appoint commissioners and panel members on July 8th.

Vikings Win Volleyball CIF Championship

Congratulations to the Valencia High School Boys Volleyball team who won their CIF championship game tonight against Santa Barbara. This is the Vikings 4th CIF championship (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008).

Hart and Valencia Baseball Go Out in Quarter Finals

Two local teams battled til they were defeated yesterday in the CIF Southern Section Div I play-offs. (Hart by Long Beach Wilson and VHS by Simi Valley) All good things must come to an end, but all that means for these talented athletes is that summer scouting will begin early for them.  Many of these boys will be playing on their scout team as early as this weekend.  In fact, there is a tournament going on today in Huntington Beach.  So while the CIF championship is out of reach, these boys are still top contenders for great accomplishments on the field this summer.

Valencia Softball Advances to Semi-Finals

The Lady Vikings defeated Corona today on their home field 6-0 which pushed them up the bracket into the semi finals.  Hart lost their battle today at Newhall Park when they gave up one precious run to Norco leaving the final score at 1-0.  The Indians had a dominant team this year and the girls have nothing to be ashamed of.  They battled hard every game and did not go down easily.

Congrats to a tough group of Lady Vikings to be the only team in the SCV to advance to the CIF Southern Section semi-final game.  Valencia will face off against Santiago (Corona) High School.  This will be a tough re-match for the girls because the Vikings beat Santiago last year in this spot in the bracket, so the team from Corona will be HUNGRY to say the least.  VHS lost to Santiago in the Nike Faster to First tournament earlier this season.  There will be a coin flip to determine who will have home field advantage next Tuesday.

GO VIKINGS!!

Eucalyptus Tree Falls onto McBean Pkwy

City Press Release Posted

Today at approximately 2 p.m., a large eucalyptus tree, located on private property on Arroyo Parkway and McBean, fell and hit at least one car, sending one person to the hospital with minor injuries, according to personnel on site.

The large-sized tree was located on the Stone Creek Apartments property when heavy winds yanked the tree out of the ground, damaging a wrought iron fence, and lifting the tree out by the roots and onto traffic lanes on Arroyo Parkway.

The Los Angeles County Fire department got the call for the downed tree and immediately called the City’s Public Works department.  Within minutes, the City’s tree service contractors were on site with City crews, removing and mulching the tree.

The City’s Arbor team subsequently inspected other trees in the vicinity and found a second tree on the same property that appeared to be leaning from the winds.  Upon further investigation, the arborists determined that the second tree needed to be taken care of as well to prevent it from falling.

At about 3 p.m., a small tree (not a eucalyptus) on Wiley Canyon, located in the center median, split and landed on the street blocking a lane of traffic for about 30 minutes.  It too was removed by city crews and no one was hurt.
