Helping Santa Clarita Grow Online - One Blog At A Time

Reports are now coming in that authorities have received a confession from a 15 year old boy that claims to have started the Buckweed Fire accidentally by playing with matches.  The 15 year old boy is currently in his parents custody and so far this is being ruled an accident.  Whether or not criminal charges are filed remains up to the District Attorney.

The Buckweed fire burned 39,000 acres and destroyed 25 structures (15 homes).

According to a KNBC news report, the county may have the option to seek compensation from the boys parents to help cover the millions spent to put out this fire.

The boy had contacted authorities a day and a half after the fire started, but the news was just released today due to the fact that they were still conducting their investigation.

As of now, his name has not been released.

I took some time yesterday to drive around a bit after attending my son’s football game over at Canyon High.  Sitting in the stands at Canyon you could see the damage on the hillside that the fires did and it was so sad to know that so many homes were lost in that neighborhood.  There was a helicopter hovering overhead for awhile most likely assessing the damage in the hills between Canyon Country and Saugus.

Some good news is that Lombardi Ranch opened for business again and has lots of pumpkins for sale.  I drove over there and took some photos along the way of our town after the fire.

This sign is hanging over the new Vincenzos on Plum and Bouquet.

You can see that the fire burned right to the hillside behind them.

Here are some more images driving back from Canyon Country over Plum to Lombardi Ranch.  BTW-If you haven’t gotten your Halloween Pumpkins yet, go to Lombardi and support the Ranch that has been around for us for so many years.  Let em know you want them to rebuild!

The Santa Clarita Wildfire Experience from the eyes of Amy Atkins(Stevenson Ranch resident).

The Santa Ana winds begin to blow. As a native Californian that has experienced numerous fire, I never forget that the reality of fire is always there. This past October 22nd, I have never seen them blow quite and furious. At approximately 2pm I was in my backyard with the phone, holding it out to let my Mother in Arizona hear how bad the winds were blowing. I told her, this is crazy, insane, my palm trees are bending as far over as they can. I was anxious and nervous but the multiple fires burning in Santa Clarita, were no where near me.

I live on a hill facing west, I look out at the magnificent view that goes off to Fillmore in the distance. There are no other homes behind me but I felt safe because these devil winds blow fire away from here not towards us. At 2:17 I got a phone call that something had started nearby. I looked out and there was smoke. Of course there had been smoke for days but the kind that was higher up from a fire further away, this was different. The smoke was low and wafting at me like something evil was coming.
