Castaic Lake Tragedy
A 12 year old boy lost his life this past Memorial Weekend after drowning in Castaic Lake. According to a report form the Department of Parks and Recreation the boy was reported missing at about noon on Sunday. The boy’s body was discovered by a lifeguard and immediately given CPR and transported to Henry Mayo Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Apparently, there were also 2 teenage girls that almost drowned on Monday. They were recovered from the lake and one needed ‘life breath’ before she was returned to shore, but both were breathing on there own before the trip to Henry Mayo.
I don’t know how or if this could’ve been prevented, but my heart goes out to his family. I have a son that age and I just cannot even image what they must be going though. I hope this is a wake-up call for everyone and that we all make more of an effort to not only watch over our own kids, but other kids as well.
Old Smiser Mule Farm
Old Smiser Mule Farm
There is quite a bit of controversy brewing over the demise of the mule farm that currently awaits residents as we enter Santa Clarita off the 5 at Calgrove. It’s a staple. We see the farm, we know we’re home. It’s peaceful and quiet perhaps like our perception of our town.
The days of the mule farm are numbered, as might be the ‘quiet and peaceful’ SCV I once knew. Apparently the mule farm will soon become a development similar to ‘The Grove’ except there will be 2-12 story buildings as well. One will be a commercial office building and one will be filled with 1000 condo units. There is also expected to be shops, high-end restaurants and a 2 story anchor retailer. Since when are we so big city and main stream? A 12 story building for condos? What is this, downtown Los Angeles?
I read a thread on the Signal forum and there are quite a few people really upset about this. If you want to contribute to the discussion go here.
I never knew Sam Smiser, but I will guess that if he were alive today, this would not be happening.
Argh, stop the insanity! Save the mule farm!
Zpizza
There’s a new pizzeria in town. Zpizza is located in the Promenade Shopping Center on the corner of McBean and Magic Mountain Parkway.
Zpizza offers a healthy alternative to pizza. With low fat cheeses and organic tomato sauce, how could it be bad for you? Zpizza also offers some flavor alternatives such as a ‘Mexican pizza’ and a ‘Thai pizza’. The Mexican pizza uses salsa instead of tomato sauce and sour cream and avocado replaces sausage and pepperoni. The Thai pizza comes with peanut sauce as the base.
If you like California Pizza Kitchen, you’ll like Zpizza. They also offer salads and sandwiches.
Check out their new location at the Promenade.

Valencia H.S. and Hart H.S. Advance to CIF Finals
Santa Clarita really dominated the CIF bracket this year with 2 of the 3 teams making it to the CIF finals which will be played on 6/2 in Irvine. Valencia and Hart will face off head to head in a battle not only for the title, but for hometown bragging rights as well.
These two teams have played twice this season and Valencia has won both games, but you never know what will happen. After all, Hart did lose to West Ranch right? It’s not over til it’s over, but I am sure that it will be a good game.
It could all come down to pitching, as softball often does. In this case it’ll be Vikings’ senior ace ‘Jordan Taylor’ against the Indians’ sophomore phenom lefty ‘Destiny Rodino’.
Good luck to both teams!
Wide Open Space Plan
I recently received a newsletter in the mail titled “Official City Information about the Proposed Open Space Preservation District”. I’ve had this sitting in my ‘things to do’ pile and just got around to reading it. I figure everybody got this, but incase you lost it, here’s a synopsis.
The city wants to create a ‘greenbelt’ around the city. They want to be able to purchase new parkland (open space) before developers get there claws hands on it. In order to achieve this, they need money. Don’t we all? Anyway, they are hoping to get about 1.5 million a year from property owners to fund this OSPD (Open Space Preservation District). This fund will be monitored by the City Council and audited annually to insure that the money is indeed being used for its intended purpose.
Here are some ‘Fast Facts’ that were in the newsletter.

Valencia Softball Advances in the CIF Bracket
Both the Valencia Vikings and the Hart Indians have advanced to the Semi-Finals in the CIF-SS Bracket. If they win one more game, they will be going head to head for the title.
The Vikings beat Marina High in a 1-0, 10 inning game on Thursday. Viking Senior Alyssa Ishibashi brought in the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th. The Vikings will be traveling to Corona on Tuesday to play a tough Santiago High School.
Hart upset the #2 ranked Camarillo girls in a 5-4 win yesterday at Newhall Park.
