Helping Santa Clarita Grow Online - One Blog At A Time

On the heels of the Newhall Ranch Rd extension opening off the 5 and the 126, Marriott is introducing its newest hotel here in Santa Clarita.

Through the construction I thought all along this would be an office building, but I drove by yesterday and saw the Courtyard by Marriott sign.

This is a full service 100% NON-smoking hotel that offers 32” flat screen TV’s in all the rooms along with refrigerators and microwaves in each room. Free wireless internet is also offered in addition to many other amenities.

Courtyard by Marriott is located at:
28523 Westinghouse Place
Valencia, Ca 91355

They expect to open their doors on our around May 10th 2007.

Now this is something I wouldn’t have expected in Santa Clarita. The city offers ‘tattoo removal’.

This program is run through the Anti-Gang Task Force. From what I can tell, if you have gang related tattoos located on a part of your body that could inhibit you from getting a job, the city will pay to have them removed.

In order to qualify for this service you must contribute 32 hours of community service or successfully complete one self-improvement class.

These seems like a great offer to local residents that might want a fresh start in life, but from what I could gather from an article in the Signal, they don’t have that many people applying for the program. In fact, the city added the ‘one self-improvement class’ option because they thought it would encourage more people to sign up. What, 32 hours of community service isn’t worth getting a new leash on life?

Dr. Raskin at Advanced Dermatology is kind enough to donate his time while the city’s Anti-Gang Task Force pays for the use of the laser.

As summer approaches Santa Clarita teens and young adults are out scouring the city trying to find a summer job. Six Flags is one of the cities top employers and they are having a job fair this May 4th and 5th from 10am-6pm.

They are offering $8 per hour for entry level positions and maybe even more for other positions.

If you’ve ever considered working up on the ‘hill of thrill’ here’s your chance. They are looking for everything from costume characters to security guards.

For more information go the Six Flags website or call their job hotline at 661-255-4800.

The SCV Press Club is seeking local students (seniors or COC students) for a fantastic scholarship opportunity. If you are interested in journalism or some career in the ‘free dissemination of information’ (hey, does blogging count?) then this could be right up your alley.

The Randy Wicks Memorial First Amendment Scholarship Program was set up in memory of Randy Wicks who worked for the Signal as an editorial cartoonist. His passing in 1996 launched this program.

On its 11th year the program expects to make $30, 000 to $40,000 available to local students that qualify and are selected.

Application packets have been sent to all local high school and COC. They are also available for pick up at the Signal office and on the SCV Press Club website.

For more information you can also email the SCV Press Club.

Santa Clarita residents can look forward to watching their beloved Westfield Town Center add about half a million square feet over the next few years. The project proposes 3 phases that will extend the mall on both the Valencia Blvd side and the Magic Mountain/Citrus corner.

We can look forward to 30 new shops (Macy’s is also said to be expanding), 4 or 5 new restaurants and another 3 level parking structure coming in phase 1. Phase 2 and 3 (Magic Mountain and Citrus) will bring another two story anchor store and a five level parking lot.

Also included in Phase 1 is an ‘outdoor lifestyle center’. Sorry, but I really don’t know what this is. It is supposed to somehow link Macy’s and Sears.

Santa Clarita loses so much tax dollar opportunity to the San Fernando Valley, so expanding the mall is a huge step forward to keeping our residents spending money in our valley.

There was no mention of what shops or restaurants would be moving in, but I have all my fingers crossed that I’ll see a Nordstrom sign going up.

There will be a public hearing at city hall regarding this project on May 15th.

What do you think will be built first? New additions to the mall or Castaic High School?
